Feeling Friday - Edition 44
Feeling Friday
Theme of the week: Anger
What is your first sign that you’re getting angry?
Maybe your jaw tightens. Your face feels warm. You have racing thoughts. You stop listening because you’re already preparing what to say back.
On Monday, I shared how online hate left me wanting to defend myself immediately. Noticing that made me realize I was angry and gave me a reason to pause. That pause helped me consider whether responding would serve me or take my attention away from something that mattered.
But it isn’t always easy to catch ourselves in the moment. Sometimes, we only recognize how angry we were after we’ve sent the message or said something we wish we could take back.
This Friday, practice noticing those signals earlier.
Mindset Activity: Recognize Your Signs
Take a few quiet minutes to reflect on a recent situation that made you angry.
1. What did you notice in your body?
Think about what changed as your anger began building. Did your shoulders tense? Did you have racing thoughts? Perhaps you clenched your fists or felt restless.
2. What was happening in your thoughts?
What were you telling yourself about the situation? Were you replaying someone’s words, assuming their intentions, or preparing your defence? Write down what went through your mind without judging yourself for it. The aim is to recognize a pattern.
3. What did you feel the urge to do?
Perhaps you wanted to interrupt, distance yourself, raise your voice, or send a message immediately. Notice the urge, whether or not you acted on it.
Now, look at what you’ve written. Choose one early signal to use as your reminder to pause.
Complete this sentence:
“When I notice __________, I will __________ before ____________.”
Anger can tell us that something matters or needs addressing. We can take that seriously while giving ourselves time to decide how to respond.
The earlier we recognize what is happening within us, the sooner we have an opportunity to make that choice.
Stay strong, even when you are not. It’s okay, you are not alone.
Love always,
